Abstract

ABSTRACT

 

This skripsi is entitled “Alih Kode dalam Instagram : Suatu Analisis Sosiolinguistikâ€. The aims of this research are to identify, analyze, and describe the code switching appeared on Instagram and explain the reason for the phenomena mentioned above.

This research uses descriptive method. The theories of Hoffman (1991) and Saville-Troike (1986) are used in this research. The data were collected from photos and videos caption and comments on Instagram in Indonesian – English from May – August 2016 that were posted by 90 users who were followed by the writer on Instagram. The total number of code switching are 120 data found from photos and videos caption and comments on Instagram.

The result of this research shows that there are three types of code switching on Instagram, namely Inter-sentential switching with 54 data, Intra-sentential switching with 50 data, and Emblematic switching with 16 data. The result of this research also shows that there are ten reasons which influence the use of code switching on Instagram, namely talking about particular topic with 29 cases found, quoting somebody else with 3 cases found, being emphatic about something (express solidarity) with 45 cases found, Interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors) with 10 cases found, repetition used for clarification with 3 cases found, Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor with 3 cases found, expressing group identity with 3 cases found, soften or strengthen request or command with 13 cases found, real lexical need with 10 cases found, and exclude other people when a comment is intended for only a limited audience with 1 case found. The dominant reasons which influence the use of code switching on Instagram are being emphatic about something (express solidarity) with 45 cases.
