PENGARUH RADIAL EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE THERAPY TERHADAP NYERI DAN KEMAMPUAN FUNGSIONAL PADA HEMIPLEGIC SHOULDER PAIN

Abstract

Background : Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (rEWST), which is one of the non-pharmacological therapy modalities, is expected to help reduce pain and accelerate functional recovery after stroke specially Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain (HSP). Objective : this study aims to determines whether rESWT are effective in decrease pain and improving functional capability of the upper extremities in HSP. Methods: This research is an experimental study with a one group pre test - post test design. A total of 33 subject were taken using consecutive sampling. Subjects who meet research criteria were given an explanation of the aims, benefits and research protocol. Then continue with initial evaluation of pain using (Numerical Pain Rating Scale) NPRS and functional capability of the upper extremities using Box and Block Test (BBT). The interventions using rESWT with conventional therapy was carried out three times a week for two weeks (total 6 sessions) with a final evaluation of NPRS and BBT was carried out at the end of second week. Results: Respective differences in NPRS scores between baseline and post-intervention was 4.64±0.48 and 1.70±0.46 (Z = -5.297 with p value < 0.001) and Baseline BBT was improved from 25.06±9.99 to 42.03±12.36 post-intervention (t = -14.507 with p value <0.001). Conclusion: rESWT consisting of six sessions could be one of the effective and safe modalities for pain management and increase functional capability of the upper extremities along with conventional therapy in HSP.
