Abstract


ABSTRACT

This study is an attempt to describe, clasify and analyze modal verbs in the novel The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks. Modals are a class of auxiliary verb that combine with the base form of a following verb to make verb phrase with a wide  varity of meaning. The effect of tense in the modals is different from verb.

In doing this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The data of modal are collected from the sentences found in the novel. The theory of Azar is used in this research. The result shows that there are eightforms of modals found in the novel, namely can, could, will, would, shall, should, might and must. The function of  modals those are: Can, expressingability,informal permission, possibility and offering; Could, expressing possibility, ability, disability, polite request; Will, expressing polite request; Would, expressing polite request; Shall, expressing obligation; Should, expressing suggestion; Must, expressing obligation; and Might, expressing necessity.
