Abstract


                                                      ABSTRACT

     This research entitled Given Name in English and Sangihe Language in Mala Village (A Contrastive Analysis). The aims of this study are to identify and classify the Given Name in English and Sangihe language especially in Mala village, as well as to describe and to contrast the factors which influenced the first name in both language. The given names in English were collected from the baby names book of B. K. Turner, the internet, and some previous done research with similiar topic. The given names in Sangihe language were collected by interviewing the inhabitants in Mala village, and also from the database in the village head office. The data of both language were collected and classified according to concepts by Hickerson and B. K. Turner, and then analyzed descriptively to find the similarities and the differences by Lado’s theory. The result of this research shows that given names in English and Sangihe language have similarities in giving the names based on the traditional names, used the classical popular names, took the names from the Holy Bible, inspired by the nature in giving names, and some names are taken from the mythology and legends. The differences are English doesn’t have names that are influenced by the Dutch and blending names as in Sangihe language.
