ABSTRACT
This research is entitled “Reduplication in English and Ternate Language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the form and meaning of reduplication in English and Ternate Language, and to find out the similarities and differences in both languages. The data of reduplication in English were collected from the text books, articles, and journals that have been researched previously, while in Ternate Language were collected from informants and Ternate Language dictionary. The data about reduplication in English and Ternate Language that have been collected then identified, classified, and analyzed by using the theory of Mattiello (2013) and Quirk and Greenbaum (1973). Then, the data of both languages were contrasted by using Lado’s (1957) theory. The result of this research showed that in English and Ternate Language, there are similarities in the form of reduplication namely full reduplication and partial reduplication. The differences be found in form and meaning, in English has two form of reduplication namely full reduplication and partial reduplication, whereas Ternate language has three form of reduplication, such as: full reduplication, partial reduplication, and the reduplication with affixation. In English, full reduplication generally applies to the basic forms of nouns and adjectives, while in Ternate Language found in verbs, adjectives, and nouns. There are several types in the form of partial reduplication in English such as ablaut reduplicative and rhyming reduplicative. In ablaut reduplicative there are several patterns in this repetition, such as: the pattern with /I/ ~ /æ/ alternation, /I/ ~ /ɒ/ alternation, and other vowels, while in the rhyming reduplicative there are several type such as: the second element starts with labial /p/, /b/, or /w/, the first element starts with a glottal /h/, and other consonants. In Ternate Language, partial reduplication is divided into three, namely ablaut reduplicative, rhyming reduplicative, and partial reduplicative at the beginning of a syllable. The meaning of reduplication in English, such as: to imitate sounds, to suggest alternating movements, to disparage by suggesting instability, nonsense, insincerity, vacillation, and to intensify. The meaning of reduplication in Ternate Language, such as: to express plural or indefinite, to express the repetition of an activity, to express an ongoing activity and to express an increase activity.
