                                                  ABSTRACT

     This research is entitled “Derivational Affixes in English and Tontemboan Language (A Contrastive Analysis). This research is an attempt to describe and analyze the English and Tontemboan language specifying on the process of derivational affix and the contrast of both languages to find the similarities and differences between the two languages. The English data were collected from several English books, dictionary, thesis, related theories from library, internet, whereas the Tontemboan data were collected from the informants and internet. The descriptive method is used to describe and analyze the derivational affixes of both languages by using O'grady dan Archibald’s theory. After describing the process of derivational affixes of English and Tontemboan language, the writer makes a contrastive analysis to findout the similarities and differences of both languages by using Lado’s theory (1971). The results of this research show that the English language has prefix and suffix only whereas the Tontemboan language has prefix, infix and suffix. English and Tontemboan have the function of changing the grammar of word classes and not changing the grammar of word classes. Both languages have processes of forming verbs, forming nouns, forming adjectives and forming adverbs. The meanings produced by the two languages vary depending on the type of affix attached to the root word. The similarities and the differences of derivational affixes between English and Tontemboan are found from the results of the analysis of the two languages.
