Abstract

Sponges are one of the marine biota that produce bioactive compounds with various structural variations and one of their biological activities is as an antibacterial. This study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of the crude sponge extract and fractions of the sponge fractionated by the liquid-liquid partition method. This antibacterial test was carried out on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria using the disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer method). The final result of this study showed that crude extracts from all types of sponge samples had antibacterial activity with the diameter of the inhibition zone on S. aureus bacteria media: Acanthostrongylophora ingens (14.3 mm), Liosina paradoxa (7.5 mm), Stylotella aurantium (14.1 mm); on media of E. coli bacteria: A. ingens (11.1 mm), L. paradoxa (7.3 mm), S. aurantium (12 mm). In the antibacterial test of the sponge fractions carried out on samples of S. aurantium sponges also showed that all fractions had antibacterial activity with the diameter of the inhibition zone on S. aureus bacterial media: N-hexane fraction (7.6 mm), ethyl acetate fraction (12 mm), methanol fraction (8 mm); on E. coli bacteria media: N-hexane fraction (9.3 mm), ethyl acetate fraction (15.5 mm), methanol fraction (8.5 mm).
