This study aims to analyze the main catch and bycatch results of gombang fishing gear operating in the waters of Selat Air Hitam, Sialang Pasung Village, West Rangsang District, Meranti Islands Regency. Sialang Pasung Village was one of the largest fishing villages in 2019. The fishery production of Rangsang Barat Subdistrict is dominated by shrimp. Gombang is a type of trap, a passive fishing gear used by fishermen for generations to catch fish and shrimp. In the last 3 years, there has been a decline in catch production in Rangsang Barat Subdistrict and a decrease in the number of gombang fishing gear in Sialang Pasung Village. Gombang has the potential to catch many non-target fish species. The composition of the catch provides new information regarding the number and types of fish caught by gombang. The research was conducted in June-July (East Season) in the waters of Selat Air Hitam, Sialang Pasung Village, using a 12-day field survey with 3 gombang units. The analysis used was the catch composition analysis, and the formula for comparing the main catch and bycatch. The results of the study show that this fishing gear catches 39 gombang species, with anchovy (Stolephorus indicus) and white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) accounting for 97% of the main catch. Bycatch (2%) consisted of 25 species, and discarded catch (1%) consisted of 8 species. One factor contributing to this diverse catch is the very small mesh size of the cod-end. The research results provide foundational data to inform the regulation of sustainable fishing gear.
