Abstract

This study is motivated by the cultural differences experienced by students from Medan when pursuing their education at Sam Ratulangi University, which require them to adapt to a new social and cultural environment. This research aims to examine the adaptation process of Medan students in intercultural communication and to understand the challenges and communication strategies they employ when interacting with local students and the surrounding community. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, involving six informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that the students’ adaptation process occurs through three stages: the stress stage, the adaptation stage, and the growth stage. In the stress stage, students experience culture shock caused by differences in language, accent, social habits, and food preferences. In the adaptation stage, they begin adjusting by learning the local dialect, modifying their communication styles, and building relationships with Manado students and residents. In the growth stage, students demonstrate improved intercultural communication skills, increased self-confidence, emotional comfort, and greater flexibility in responding to cultural differences without losing their original identity. This study concludes that intercultural communication plays a crucial role in the successful adaptation of migrant students, as effective communication fosters understanding and acceptance within both campus and social environments.
