Abstract: Thoracic trauma is a fairly common occurrence in Indonesia, and North Sulawesi is the province with the highest incidence of thoracic trauma. Many patients with thoracic trauma end up with hemothorax. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of hemothorax patients at Prof.. Dr. R. D. Kandou General Hospital in Manado. This was a descriptive study with a retrospective approach, using purposive sampling technique. The results showed that there were 73 patients as samples in this study, with the median age of 38 years (12-84 years). The majority of patients were male (83.6%), unemployed (42.5%), had high school/MA education (67.1%). Meanwhile, the majority of trauma were blunt trauma (64.4%), multiple trauma (43.8%), located mostly on the left side (52.1%), and managed mostly with chest tube (72.6%). The length of stay of patients was mostly in the range of 7-14 days (50%), and the mortality rate was relatively high (11.1%). In conclusion, hemothorax due to trauma at Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou General Hospital in Manado most commonly occurs in productive-aged males with blunt trauma. Chest tube insertion is the primary management, and to date, the mortality rate of hemothorax remains relatively high.
