Abstract: Stroke patients often experience long-term trauma, making it difficult to maintain oral hygiene. The Fone method is a small-scale toothbrushing technique commonly used for children and individuals with disabilities, involving simple circular movements that are considered effective in reducing tooth friction and gum irritation, and making it suitable for stroke patients. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of conventional and electric toothbrushes using the Fone method in reducing dental plaque index in stroke patients. This was a pre-experimental study. Subjects were stroke patients at Rumah Sakit Khusus Daerah Dadi Makassar, divided into two groups: using electric toothbrush and conventional toothbrush groups. Data were obtained through plaque accumulation assessment, measured by using the Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) index. The results showed that the difference in the average plaque accumulation scores in subjects before and after using conventional toothbrush was -0.693 (SD±1.007), while in subjects using electric toothbrush it was -1.480 (SD±0.917). The Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference in dental plaque index between the two groups (p=0.038). In conclusion, electric toothbrush with the Fone method is more effective in reducing the dental plaque index in stroke patients compared to conventional toothbrush.
