Abstract

Abstract: Orthodontic treatment aims to improve facial appearance, function, and maintain the stability of good treatment results. The use of fixed orthodontic appliances can cause problems, especially in maintaining dental and oral health around the brackets attached to the teeth. In the third of the tooth crown at the gingival edge, plaque tends to accumulate which is difficult to clean. Toothpaste is used in dental practice to improve oral hygiene, strengthen teeth against caries, eliminate bad breath (halitosis) and provide a fresh sensation to the mouth. This study aimed to determine the difference in the inhibition zones of orthodontic toothpaste and non-orthodontic toothpaste on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. This study was conducted at the Laboratory of Genetics and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar, using the experimental laboratory method with a post test only control design. The Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between concentration 7.5% dan 10% of each type of tooth paste (p=0.004). The Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant difference between the effects of orthodontic paste and non-orthodontic paste on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (p=0.002). In conclusion, the orthodontic toothpaste shows a stronger inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria compared to the non-orthodontic toothpaste. The higher the concentration of tooth paste, the larger the inhibitory zone.

Abstrak: Perawatan ortodonti bertujuan untuk memperbaiki penampilan wajah, fungsi serta mempertahankan kestabilan hasil perawatan yang baik. Penggunaan peranti ortodonti cekat dapat menimbulkan masalah, terutama dalam menjaga kesehatan gigi dan mulut di sekitar bracket yang ditempelkan pada gigi. Pada sepertiga mahkota gigi di tepi gingiva, cenderung terjadi akumulasi plak yang sulit dibersihkan. Pasta gigi digunakan dalam praktik kedokteran gigi untuk meningkatkan kebersihan mulut, memperkuat gigi terhadap karies, menghilangkan bau mulut (halitosis) serta memberikan sensasi kesegaran pada mulut. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui perbedaan zona hambat pasta gigi ortodonti dan pasta gigi non-ortodonti terhadap pertumbuhan Staphylococcus aureus. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Laboratorium Genetika dan Biologi Molekuler Fakultas FMIPA Universitas Negeri Makassar, dengan menggunakan metode eksperimental laboratorium dengan post test only control design. Hasil uji Mann-Whitney menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara konsentrasi 7,5% dan 10% pada masing-masing jenis pasta gigi (p=,004). Hasil uji Kruskal-Wallis menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara pasta gigi ortodonti dan pasta gigi non- ortodonti terhadap pertumbuhan Staphylococcus aureus (p=0,002). Simpulan penelitian ini pasta gigi ortodonti memiliki daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan Staphylococcus aureus, yang lebih kuat dibandingkan pasta gigi non-ortodonti. Konsentrasi pasta gigi yang lebih tinggi memiliki zone hambat yang lebih besar.
