This study aims to understand the relationship between place identity theory and behavioral architecture
within the pedestrian area of the Megamas Mantos district in Manado City. This approach places humans as
the foundation for spatial formation, while place identity theory emphasizes how space becomes an integral
part of users’ personal and social identities. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, involving
analysis and observation of social phenomena in urban public spaces. The findings indicate that place identity
in the Megamas Mantos pedestrian area is formed through the interaction between physical elements such as
pedestrian pathways and open spaces social activities including recreation, culinary experiences, and
community interaction, as well as symbolic meanings that reflect the coastal culture of Manado. This study
highlights the importance of adopting a behavioral architecture approach to maintain a balance between
commercial functions and local socio cultural values.
