Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT

      This study entitled “Illocutionary Act in the Gospel of Matthew: A Pragmatic Analysisâ€. The method that is used in this research is descriptive method. The purpose of this study is to identify, classify and analyze the kinds and functions of ilocutionary act in the Gospel of Matthew. The collected data have been analyzed by using theory of Searle (1979) in Leech (1983). There are four kinds of illocutionary act in the Gospel of Matthew, those are assertives, directives, commisives, and declaratives. While expressives were not spoken by the characters in the Gospel of Matthew. The illocutionary functions of assertives in this Gospel are stating, another functions as, asserting, suggesting, complaining, reporting were not found in the verses of the Gospel of Matthew, the illocutionary functions of directives which were used by Jesus, His disciples, and other characters were requesting, commanding, advising, asking. ordering and recommending function are not found in the Gospel of Matthew. The illocutionary functions of commisives is promising. While functions like uttering are not stated, the illocutionary functions of declaration which are used in the Gospel of Matthew are granting and naming. Functions of promoting and punishing were not found in the Gospel of Matthew. The significance of this research is to give contribution of the language development in linguistic study especially in analyzing illocutionary act through pragmatic analysis.
