Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT

     This research entitles “Expressive act in the Film Divergent by Neil Burgerâ€. The aims of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the expressive act utterances and their functions in Divergent film. This research used descriptive method. The data were collected from conversation among characters, then classified and analyzed according to the concept of Searle (1970). In collecting the data, the writer reads some pragmatic books pertaining to expressive act. After that, the writer watch the film and looks the whole story of the film to obtain good understanding of the context of the story in the film. Then the writer identified and classified the data into function of expressive act. The collected data were analyzed descriptively in terms of the function of expressive act found in the film Divergent based on Searle’s theory. The research showes that the expressive act can be categorized into six categories, those are apologizing, pardoning, praising, thanking, congratulating, and condoling, and how the function of expressive act used by the characters. It is expected that this study will help students and readers in learning pragmatics especially on expressive act found in the film.
