Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT

     This study is an attempt to identify, analyze, and describe thetypesofdirect and indirect speech in English and Sangir language. In collecting data, thewriterasked 4 informant who can speak Sangir Language well. The gender of informantsaremale and female, approximately 40-70 years old who live in Sangtombolang. Thewriterdescribed and identified the sentences which refer to direct and indirect speechinEnglish and Sangir language. The writer also described the types of direct andindirectspeech in English and Sangir language and contrasted them to find out the semilaritiesand dif erences of Direct and Indirect Speech used the concept of Quirket al(1973:141-146) and Lado descriptively. The result of this investigation showsthatEnglish has Direct and Indirect speech as well as Sangir language and alsohasthesimilarities and dif erences. In the similarities, English and Sangir language havethesame in the types and form as quatation marks, quatation sentences, statements,commands and also changes in the time and place. In the dif erences, Englishhaschange in to be auxiliary verbs, while Sangir language has not.
