UNGKAPAN PENGHALUS PENGGANTI KATA-KATA TABU DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS DAN BAHASA TONTEMBOAN (DIALEK MAKELA’I) SUATU ANALISIS KONTRASTIF

Abstract

                                                      ABSTRACT

     This research is entitled “Euphemism in English and Tontemboan Language (Makela’i dialect): A Contrastive Analysis. The aims of this study are to identify, classify, analyze and to contrast the euphemism in English and Tontemboan language (Makela’i Dialect). In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from Euphemism bookssociolinguitic books, Journal, website, and some skripsi, while Tontemboan data were collected from several Tontemboan (makela’i dialect) native speakers who live in Manembo village, South Langowan Sub District, library and some previous research. In this research, the writer uses the theories of Wardhaugh (1986) and Fromkin and Rodman (1997) in analyzing the data and Lado’s theory (1971) in contrasting both languages to find out their similarities and differences. The result of this research shows that English and Tontemboan language (Makela’i dialect) have similarities and differences. In terms of similarities, each language has six Euphemism with same meanings. English and Tontemboan language have a Euphemism which are used to make the conversation sounds polite. For the differences, euphemism in English are usually in qestions, while the euphemism in Tontemboan language (Makela’i dialect) are not only used in question but also in statement.
