Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT

     This study is about “English Acquisition in 4 to 5 year old children Using Picture Visualisation at TK Gmim Bukit Zaitunâ€. The research questions are what extend is the mastery of English vocabulary obtained through learning using picture visualisation and what English vocabulary can be obtained through learning using picture visualisation at TK Gmim Bukit Zaitun. The aims of the research are an attempt to identify and classify the mastery of English vocabulary obtained through learning using picture visualisation and to analyze and describe English vocabulary obtained by using picture visualisation.The research took 17 students as sample and the data were taken through interview. A qualitative method was used with the support of simple statistical analysis to answer research question. The writer used Tabors and Snow’s theory on telegraphic and formulaic speech and productive language in this research. The outcome of the interviews shows that the mastery of English acquisition vocabulary is in two stages (telegraphic/formulaic speech and productive language) as follows : part of body (70% telegraphic, 30% productive language), fruits (59% telegraphic, 41% productive language), part of family (71% telegraphic, 29% productive language), numeral (53% telegraphic, 47% productive language), color (59% telegraphic, 41% productive language) and the English vocabulary that obtained through learning using picture visualisation as follows : part of body (head, eye, ear, nose, mouth, hand, foot), fruits (apple, strawberry, grapes, banana, lemon, pineapple), part of family (grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, uncle, aunt, brother, sister, baby), numeral (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten), color (red, pink , brown, white, orange, green, blue, black, gray, yellow, purple). This research recommends to the teacher at TK Gmim Bukit Zaitun to increase the students motivation in learning English by using interesting picture visualisation and provide more practice in vocabulary pronounciation. This research also suggest for further research to focusing in preschool, kindergarten or elementary school to examine their English language acquisition.
