Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of yoga on the pressure pain threshold of lower back muscle and ligament in health workers with chronic mechanical low back pain. Methods: This study was an experimental study with one group pre test – post test design which was conducted at the Nutrition Installation of Prof. RSUP. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado from October to November 2022. A total of 19 subjects of health workers with chronic mechanical LBP participated in this study for 4 weeks divided into 8 practice sessions (2 sessions per week). All subjects followed the initial and final assessments. Yoga treats are given for 1 hour for 1 practice session. Assessment of the pressure pain threshold was carried out using an Algometer which was carried out before and after yoga practice. Results: There was a very significant difference between the mean lower back muscle tenderness threshold value before and after yoga practice (p <0.001). The mean threshold value of Tenderness in the Longissimus Thoracic Muscle before = 3.847 and after Yoga Practice = 6.2789 (t = -7.193 with p value <0.001). The mean value of the pressure pain threshold in the Iliocostalis Lumborum muscle before = 3.5053 and after yoga practice = 5.7368 (t = -7.243 with p value <0.001). The mean value of the pressure pain threshold in the Multifidus Muscle before = 3.7684 and after Yoga Practice = 6.1842 (t = -7.897 with a p value <0.001). The mean value of the pressure pain threshold in the Quadratus Lumborum Muscle before = 2.9105 and after Yoga Practice = 4.3789 (t = -7.681 with a p value <0.001). The mean value of the pressure pain threshold in the Gluteus Medius Muscle before = 3.2579 and after Yoga Practice = 5.0263 (t = -9.464 with a p value <0.001). The median pressure pain threshold in the Supraspinous Ligament before = 4.3 and after Yoga Practice = 4.9 (Z = -3.532 with p value <0.001). Conclusion: Yoga can increase the pressure pain threshold of lower back muscle and ligament in health workers with chronic mechanical LBP using an Algometer.
