Abstract

Free radicals can damage body cells through the oxidation process. Antioxidants are compounds that can neutralize free radicals and prevent cell damage. One that has antioxidant activity is the insulin plant (Smallanthus soncifolius) with compounds that act as antioxidants, namely flavonoids and phenols. This study aims to determine the effect of solvents on the antioxidant activity of insulin leaves. The method of testing antioxidant activity is DPPH and ABTS with aquadest, 50% ethanol, and 96% ethanol solvents for the extraction process. Samples of DPPH Aquadest (DA), DPPH ethanol 50% (DE50), DPPH Ethanol 96% (DE96), ABTS Aquadest (AA), ABTS Ethanol 50% (AE50) and ABTS 96% (AE96) were obtained. The test results obtained were AA (12.13 ppm), AE50 (16.24 ppm), AE96 (18.91 ppm), DA (21.40 ppm), DE50 (22.29 ppm), and DE96 (25.06 ppm). It can be concluded that the selection of solvents affects the antioxidant activity of insulin leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius). Aquadest solvent has the best antioxidant activity (p <0.05)
