Abstract

Land area with steep slope in Manado is 62,66% of the total’s city area.Population and city growth have caused scarcity of land for living, so that thedevelopment of the city moved to the steep slope riverbank. The problems of suchdevelopment in this area are erosion and landslide. Some factors that cause erosionand landslide are steep slope, rainfall, soil condition, vegetation and humanbehaviour. Manado is one of the landslide disaster area especially when the rainfallis high. Kampong Weris as the case study for this research lies in one of steep sloperiverbank in Manado and often has experienced erosion and landslide disasters. Thecauses are internal and external factors, from existing condition, either naturalenviroment and man made. By using Kampong Weris as a case study, the goal of thisresearch is to know the cause of erosion and landslide problems and also to proposea model for the development of settlements in steep slope riverbank, which isresponsive to those problems. Analysis was conducted using literature studyapproach and comparing the experiences of other cases in applying techniques andsolutions to respond erosion and landslide which may be applicable in KampongWeris. Based on this research, the concept for settlement development in steep sloperiverbank has to be based on specific problems of steep slope zone and riverbank andalso on community responses and preferences. Concept rests on principle that thereshould be slope protection and stabilisation system and run off control. Final findingis the combination of zoning model and the size of land for utilization, slopeprotection model, drainage model, dwelling and infrastructure development modeland vegetation model.
