Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study is an attempt to describe the English language and Saluan language forms on the process of reduplication in both languages. This research design aims at contrasting the English language and Saluan language reduplication in their forms, fuction and meaning in the sentence structure.

The English language data are collected from several grammar books and dictionary, whereas the Saluan language data are collected from informants, internet, library and analyzed with the example of the research reports done so far.

The descriptive method is used to describe and analyse the reduplication of both language by using theory’s of Quirk and Greenbaum (1985), O’Grady and De Guzman, and Chaer. After describing the process of reduplication of English and Saluan language, the writer makes a contrastive analysis in finding out the similarities and differences of both language by using Lado’s theory.

The result of my investigation similiraties between English language and Saluan language are both language has a full reduplication function, and another type of full reduplication, and has part of speech, there are noun, verb, and adjective. The differences of both language are English language has a full reduplication of phonemic variations, whereas Saluan language has not phonemic variation, and just has partial reduplication, false reduplication, and affixation reduplication. A full reduplication of Saluan language, such as: ‘mian-mian’ which means while many people, is not a full reduplication of English language.

Theoretically, the significance of this study is to give a reference in terms of reduplications in English and Saluan language and is expected to be useful to develop morphology. Practically, this research is expected to help the students of English department or other readers in learning morphology, especially on reduplication.
