MODUS DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS DAN BAHASA MELAYU MANADO (SUATU ANALISIS KONTRASTIF)

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT

     This research entitled Mood in English and Manado Malay Language: A Contrastive Analysis. The aims of this study are to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and analyze the differences and similarities of mood in English and Manado Malay language. This research used a descriptive method. The writer used Aarts and Aarts (1982) and Frank (1972) theory to identify and classify the kinds and functions of mood and Lado’s (1957) theory to contrast both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The result of this research shows 3 kinds of mood with each function in both languages. Kinds and functions of mood in English are indicative mood to declare all situation without the imperative and subjunctive mood, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty, wish, and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, request and instruction. Kinds and functions of mood in Manado Malay language are indicative mood to declare all situation, subjunctive mood to declare uncertainty and encourage, and imperative mood to declare command, instruction, and request. The similarity in both languages are has the same definition and function to explain a fact (indicative) or nonfact (subjunctive, imperative) situation. The differences in both languages are English has regular and irregular verb and using ‘to be’ to distinguish singular and plural, whereas Manado Malay language has no an alteration of verb form towards singular or plural.
