                                                   ABSTRACT

     This study entitled “Illocutionary Act in the Drama Riders to the Sea By J. M. Synge“ is an analysis of pragmatic investigation that focuses on one aspect of speech acts called the illocutionary act. This research is an attempt to find out the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act in the drama. The collected data have been taken through the utterances uttered by the characters and analyzed descriptively based on the theory of Searle. The research finding shows that there are three categories of illocutionary acts in that drama. Those are assertives : (asserting), (complaining), (proposing), and (reporting). Directives : (advising), (begging), (ordering), and (requesting). Expressives : (deep condolences) and (caviling). This study is expected to give a contribution to language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing illocutionary acts through pragmatic analysis.
