PENINGKATAN KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA BAHASA INGGRIS ANAK SEKOLAH MELALUI PENGGUNAAN TEKNIK STORYTELLING
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research entitled "Enhancing Students’ Speaking Skill Through the Use of Storytelling Technique". This study aims to identify, analyze, and describe the implementation of storytelling techniques in enhancing students English speaking skill. The use of storytelling technique besides make students enjoy the learning processes, but also develop their love in culture through the teaching material Toar and Lumimuut stories in “Written English IV: From the Local Perception of Minahasan Folklore” writted by Warouw (2019). The object of this research is class VIA, SD Kr. Eben Haezar 1 Manado. The theory of Nunan (1991) speaking, Haven (2000) storytelling, and Burns (2010) classroom action research are used to identify and analyze the data, and Sudaryanto’s (1993) qualitative method used to describe the data. Classroom action research method used to find out the phenomenon in the process of children's learning activities in class from the begining until the end of the meeting, divisible into 2 cycles. Each of cycle has four stages: planning, action, observation and reflection. In cycle 1, the writer applied the storytelling techniques in 3 differences learning activities, such as: Pre-lesson activities (opening activities), Main lesson activities (core activities), and Post-lesson activities (closing activities). In cycle 2, the writer applies the learning process to students by modifying the learning activities using the picture series technique. In this research to enhance student speaking skill, writer also obtained the results from observation and tests. From observation, storytelling techniques can be used in classroom to train students for loving their own culture, to make them creative and innovative person. Furthemore, develop student's speaking skill and their confidence in using English language. From tests, the significant increase for the result of students’, pre-test total 45 points, cycle 1 total 135 points, cycle 2 total 164 points, and post-test total 251 points.
