ABSTRAK
This research is an attempt to describe and analyze terms of address in English and Tontemboan language. The problems of this research namely “what are the terms of address used in English and Tontemboan language and what are the similarities and differences terms of address that used in English and Tontemboan language.” The theory used in this research are Burling (1970) and Lounsburry‟s (1974) theories to analyze the terms of address, then compare and contrast the analysis between English and Tontemboan language using Lado‟s (1957) theory. The English data were taken from sociolinguistic books especially about terms of address, internet and previous thesis about terms of address that have been done before whereas the data about the terms of address in Tontemboan language were collected from the informants. Data were taken by interviewing the informants who know well about Tontemboan language and can speak Tontemboan language fluently. The result of this research shows that the terms of address in both languages are divided into consanguinal and afinal terms which are differentiated between sex, level of generation, lineage and age. Similarities in terms of sex, generation for example in „grandfather‟ in English and „tete‟ in Tontemboan language, lineage and age. The differences are that the terms of address in English do not separate the age of relatives while in Tontemboan language does. In temrs of generation, the English and Tontemboan have the same generation such as four generations above and below ego.
