ABSTRACT
This study which is entitled “Racism During Civil War as Reflected in Langston Hughes Poems”. Focusing on the types of racism in Langston Hughes poems and describes how racism can occur in the poems through the relationship between the author and his poems. The objective of this study is to identify, analyze, and describe the types of racism in Hughes’ five poems entitled: As I Grew Older, Democracy, I, Too, Let America Be America Again, and You and Your Whole Race. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, it used expressive theory by Abrams (1971) and supported theory of literature and biography by Wellek and Warren (1963) to see how the expression that the author pours into his work is based on his personal experience. The results of this study to answer the statement of research problem about the types of racism contained in five of Hughes’ poems and the relationship between the author and his poems are as follows: 1) In the poems of Hughes there are two types of racism, including: personal racism and institutional racism. The personal racism type dominate in every poem. 2) The writer finds out how racism is reflected in Hughes’s poems by reading every poems text that contains racism according to the author expression in his poems. That in the Hughes era at that time African-American did not get their right, namely independence while in America.
