        TOPONIMI DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS DAN BAHASA TONTEMBOAN

                                                    ABSTRACT

     This research is an attempt to describe and analyze toponymy in English and Tontemboan language (Analysis Contrastive). The problems of this research namely “What are the Types and Meanings of Toponymy in English and Tontemboan Language and what are the Differences and Similarities of both Languages”. The method used in this research is a descriptive method. The theories used in this research are Tent & Slatyer’s theory and Pietro’s theory to contrast both languages. The English data were collected from books, whereas the data about toponymy in Tontemboan language were collected from the informants. The data were taken by interviewing the informants who are native speakers of Tontemboan and can speak the Tontemboan language fluently. The results of this research showed that the toponymy in English and Tontemboan have place naming based on the types of toponyms, namely descriptive toponyms, association toponyms, occurrent toponyms, evaluative toponyms, shifting toponyms, indigenous toponyms, and eponymous toponyms. English and Tontemboan language have similarities in the category of toponym types, namely description toponyms in English, for example, Avawatcz “Mountains” and in Tontemboan for example, Kuntungrangka “High mountain (garden name)”, Toponym associaton Pitt River “To trap animals” Mawale “Move village”, Toponym occurrent Atascadero “Muddy place” Matani “Farming”, Toponym evaluative Hornitos “Oven bake” , Tanukota “Resembling city”, Toponym indigenous Pedernales “Forfeit” Sanga “Unilateral”, Toponym eponym Gendora “Taken from his wife’s name, Lendora” kineke “The name of the wife of Dotu Wa’ani”. The difference of the six categories the type pf toponyms for which no dat-a was found in the Tontemboan Language, namely the type of evaluative toponyms.
