                                                ABSTRACTS

     This research is entitled “Taboo Words in English and Banggai Language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. This study aims at identifying and classifying the types and meanings of taboo words and analyzing their differences and similarities. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data obtained were analyzed using Wardhaugh's theory (1986:230) to find out the types, Leech's theory to find out the meanings (1981:19), and Lado’s theory to contrast taboo words in the two languages to find out the differences and similarities (1971:217). The significance of this research is theoretically, this research is expected to be able to contribute to the development of sociolinguistics, especially in terms of taboo words, and practically it can be useful for the younger generation of Banggai Islands who want to learn taboo words in English and for foreign students, who want to learn taboo words in Banggai Language. The results of this study indicate that taboo words contained in Banggai Language are classified into eight types, namely, sex, bodily functions, animals, excretion, death, religion, swearing, and demons. This shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express happiness, anger, express emotions, joke, be happy, surprise, insult, and talk about sex.
