                                                      ABSTRACT

     This research entlied “Politeness Principles in the Novel The Three Musheteers by Alexandre Dumas” focused on maxims related to politeness principles. The analysis dims of the research are to identify, classify, and analyze maxim of politeness and their functions. The method of this research is descriptive method. Descriptive method is a method from callecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting data. The data were collected through conversation among characters, classified and analyzed then baned on the concept of Leech (1983). The result shows that there are six maxim of politeness and their function applied by the characters in the dialogue, in their dialogue. The maxim are the tact maxim, the generosity maxim, the approbation maxim, the modesty maxim, the agreement maxim, the sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and readers more understand about politeness principles.
