ABSTRACT
Dental caries is a dental disease which caused by Streptococcus mutans. Dental caries can be avoid by inhibit growth of cariogenic bacteria. Guava leaves can become a good choice because it has active compound which has attribute that inhibit growth and kill bacteria. The purpose of this study is to find out antibacterial efficacy of guava leaf extract against growth of Streptococcus mutans. This was a laboratory experimental study with concentration of guava leaf extract was 30%, 50%, and 100%, and ciprofloxasin as a positive control. Minimum concentration of guava leaf extract that can inhibit Streptococcus mutans growth was 30%, while maximum concentration was 100%. Blocking zone which was formed from guava leaf extract can inhibit growth of Streptococcus mutans. The higher concentration of the extract, the bigger blocking zone was formed against Streptococcus mutans’s growth.

ABSTRAK
Karies merupakan penyakit gigi yang disebabkan oleh bakteri Streptococcus mutans. Karies gigi dapat dicegah dengan cara menghambat pertumbuhan dari bakteri karsiogenik. Daun jambu biji bias dijadikan pilihan karena mengandung senyawa aktif yang bersifat menghambat pertumbuhan dan membunuh bakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas antibakteri ekstrak daun jambu biji terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Streptococcus mutans. Penelitian ini merupakan eksperimental laboratories dimana konsentrasi ekstrak daun jambu biji yang diuji yaitu 30%, 50%, dan 100%, dengan ciprofloksasin sebagai control positif. Konsentrasi minimal ekstrak daun biji yang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans ialah 30%, sedangkan konsentrasi maksimal ekstrak daun biji yang dapat pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans ialah 100%. Zona hambat yang terbentuk dari ekstrak daun jambu biji diketahui dapat menghambat pertumbuhan Steptococcusmutans. Semakin tinggi konsentrasi ekstrak daun jambu biji semakin besar daya hambat yang terbentuk terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans.
