Abstract

Fish otolith is a product of biomineralization in the fish body. In several studies, otolith ha been used to estimate fish age that is a crucial parameter to describe fish population and sustainable management of the fish stock. Otolith occurs in all teleosts, i.e. sagitta, utrikulus, and lagena. Until now, the morphometric characteristics of Decapterus akaadsi, Carangidae, otolith have not been described yet, particularly its microstructure, such as length, width, area, perimeer, and biomineral element.

The otolith of D. akaadsi was studied on sagittal pair samples (left and right) of 29 males and 22 females. The image of these otoliths was assessed using ImageJ application to describe length, width, perimeter, and area of the otolith. Total body length of D.akaadsi samples was found not significant to determine the major descriptor of the otolith. Morphomeric variations of length (2.24 mm) and width (5.26 mm) did not show difference between left otolith and right otolith as between male and female otoliths.

Growth pattern analysis found t cal.  > t tab. meaning that males, females, and  male-female mixture had allometric growth.
