Background: The infant mortality in Indonesia is still high. Based on WHO data in 2020, there were 2.4 million neonates who died every year. Causes of neonatal death include intrapartum events, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders, LBW, prematurity, congenital abnormalities, and infection. One of the government's efforts to reduce mortality is through a referral service system.
Aim: This study aims to determine the characteristics of NICU referral patients at RSUP Prof Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado, period January to December 2022.
Methods: This study is a retrospective descriptive study using secondary data in the form of medical records.
Result: A total of 167 NICU referral patients, where most of the referral patients came from type C hospitals (69.5%). Based on gender, males are more distributed than females. Patients with a treatment duration of 1 to 7 days had the largest distribution (32.3%). Neonatal sepsis was the most common final diagnosis, namely 124 babies, followed by pneumonia with 82 babies. It was found that the outcome of NICU referral patients who died was greater than that of those who survived.
Conclusion: Referral patients in the NICU at RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado mainly come from type C hospitals, stay for 1 to 7 days, are predominantly male, and most commonly diagnosed with neonatal sepsis, which has the highest mortality rate.
