Health Education on Diabetes Mellitus and Training in Blood Glucose Measurement for Older Adults and Members of the PKK Women’s Organization in Lopana Village, East Amurang District, South Minahasa Regency

Abstrak

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic health condition with a growing prevalence among the elderly, including in Lopana Village, East Amurang District, South Minahasa. This situation is compounded by limited community knowledge regarding the disease, its prevention, and the skills required for independent blood glucose monitoring. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge of elderly individuals and members of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) concerning Diabetes Mellitus, as well as to improve their competence in measuring blood glucose levels. The methods applied included health education through interactive lectures and discussions, complemented by hands-on demonstrations of blood glucose measurement using a glucometer. Evaluation was conducted by observing participants’ engagement and level of understanding before and after the intervention. The results indicated a marked improvement in participants’ knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus, including its risk factors, prevention, and management, along with enhanced skills in independently performing blood glucose measurements. In conclusion, health education combined with practical training in blood glucose monitoring proved effective in strengthening the knowledge and skills of elderly individuals and PKK members, thereby supporting early detection and community-based control of Diabetes Mellitus.
