AFIKS DERIVASI DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS DAN BAHASA PAMONA (ANALISIS KONTRASTIF)

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT

     This research entitled “Derivational Affixes of English and Pamona Language (A Contrastive Analysis)â€, is the requirement for the Sarjana Sastra degree in the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. This research aims to identify, classify the types, function, meaning of derivational affixes and to analyze the similarities and differences in both English and Pamona Language by using Fromkin et.al (2014) and Katamba’s (1993) theories and to contrast by using Lado’s (1971) theory. This research uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from Barack Obama and Donald Trump speech and the data of Pamona Language were taken from three native speakers as informants who were born and live in Tentena Village, Central Sulawesi. The result of this research shows that the types of derivational affixes in English are prefixes and suffixes; the type of derivational affixes in Pamona language are prefixes, infixes, suffixes, and confixes. The main function of both English and Pamona derivational affixes are to changing the grammatical class and not changing grammatical class. English and Pamona Language have the same prefix which have a function as a different word-former. English and Pamona Language have words which produce new words with different meanings from the basic words when added to derivational affixes. The differences of both derivational affixes are Pamona language has infixation, meanwhile English does not. In context of meaning, derivational affixes in English have prefixes that produce negative meaning, but the derivational affixes in Pamona language have no prefixes that denote negative meaning. Moreover, English does not have derivation affixes that can be used to form a reduplication as in Pamona. The process of forming adverbs in English only comes from adjectives. However, in Pamona, adverbs can come from the base word of a noun and adjective as well.
