ABSTRACT
Bracket is one of ortodonti care components that stay the longest in the mouth. Stainless steel bracket is a type of bracket mostly used, and commonly contains chromium and nickel due to its good mechanical components, economical and relatively resistant to corrosion. Stainless steel bracket will interact with their environment in the mouth cavity and leads to corrosion process. Chromium and nickel are released as corrosion process takes place and in turn, these compounds get in to the body and can cause hypersensitivity reactions. The present study was design to identify the amount of chromium and nickel discharged from stainless steel bracket soaked in isotonic drink. Laboratory experimental was employed using post test only control design. Samples collected were tested using spektrofotometri UV-VIS for ion releasing of chromium and nickel. Eight solution samples were divided into 2 groups of four. Stainless steel brackets were soaked in to saliva without isotonic drink and the other brackets were soaked into saliva with isotonic drink for 208 minutes in 370C incubator. Research results showed that an average of 0,125 ppm of nickel and 0.014 ppm of chromium were discharged from treated isotonic drink.
Key words: stainless steel bracket, isotonic drink, nickel and chromium ion.
