           Activities which done by both animals and humans oftenly cause injury to the skin surface and cause infection. Among the bacteria which often cause infection against humans is Staphylococcus epidermidis. Awar-awar leaves contains compounds of saponins, alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids that act as antibacterial. The aim of this research is to make the formulation of gel preparation of ethanol extract of awar-awar leaves with three variations of HPMC base concentration of 2.0 %, 3.5 % and 5.5 %, and also to test the effect of gel on their antibacterial activity. The results show that the ethanol extracts of awar-awar leaves can not be formulated as a gel preparation that not meet the organoleptic requirement. But gel preparation formulation of ethanol extract of awar-awar leaves with 2% concentration is the best formulation to inhibit the activity of S. epidermidis bacteria since it has a 9.6 mm inhibition zone which is categorized as moderate inhibitory category.

Aktivitas yang dilakukan baik oleh hewan maupun manusia seringkali menimbulkan luka pada permukaan kulit dan menyebab infeksi. Di antara bakteri yang sering menimbulkan infeksi pada manusia adalah Staphylococcus epidermidis. Daun awar-awar mengandung senyawa golongan saponin, alkaloid, tanin dan flavonoid yang berperan sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat formulasi sediaan gel ekstrak etanol daun awar-awar dengan tiga variasi konsentrasi basis HPMC yakni 2%, 3,5% dan 5,5 % serta menguji pengaruh gel tersebut terhadap aktivitas antibakterinya. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa ekstrak etanol daun awar-awar tidak dapat diformulasikan sebagai sediaan gel antibakteri karena tidak memenuhi persyaratan dalam uji organoleptik. Tetapi formulasis sediaan gel ekstrak etanol daun awar-awar dengan konsentrasi 2% merupakan formulasi yang paling baik dalam menghambat aktivitas bakteri S. epidermidis karena memiliki zona hambat 9,6 mm yang termasuk dalam kategori daya hambat sedang.
