ABSTRACT
Gedi (Abelmoschus manihot L. Medik) has been know as food that can consume by people in North Sulawesi. The purpose of this study is determine the antihyperglycemic effect of the ethanol extract of red gedi leaves on white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain induced by alloxan. Animals was devided into 5 groups, namely negative control and metformin as positive control and ethanol extract of red gedi leaves with doses of 150 mg/kgBW, 300 mg/kgBW, and 600 mg/kg of body weight, each group was given alloxan i.p. Blood glucose was measurements on day 0 (three days after induction), day 7 and day 14. The results showed group that treat with red gedi leaves extract could reduce blood glucose levels. The dose of 150 mg/kgBW had a decreased percentage of blood glucose on day 7 and day 14 of 15.48% and 74.84%, respectively. Doses of 300 mg/kgBW had a decreased percentage of blood glucose on day 7 and day 14 of 33.64% and 70.5%, respectively. The dose of 600 mg/kgBW had a decreased percentage of blood glucose on day 7 and day 14 of 27.11% and 71.93%, respectively. Statistical analysis shows that the dosage of 300 mg/kg body weight has a significant difference with the dosage of 150 mg/kgBW and 600 mg/kgBW. It can be concluded that the dose of 300 mg/kgBW has the best antihyperglycemic activity.
