ABSTRACT
Â
Endophytic bacteria are bacteria that live in plant tissues and colonize the intercellular spaces and areas of the vascular system. The presence of endophytic bacteria can stimulate plant growth, increase the utilization of nutrients and produce growth hormones and increase plant resistance to various pathogenic microorganisms. Endophytic bacteria can produce compounds that have the potential as antibacterial. This study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of gedi leaf endophytic bacteria (Abelmoschus manihot) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The research method used is a laboratory experiment. The results of the isolation obtained four isolates of endophytic bacteria from A. manihot. The results of antibacterial research showed that the average inhibitory power of E. coli isolate NB1 was (33.8 ± 15.7) and S. aureus (42.8 ± 11.8) was included in the very strong category in inhibiting the test bacteria. The NB2 isolate did not show any antibacterial activity, the test bacteria S. aureus (5 ± 8.66) was in the moderate category. NB3 isolate showed moderate activity in inhibiting the test bacteria with an average (7.6 ± 6.63) E. coli and S. aureus (5.8 ± 5.20). NB4 isolate had high inhibitory power of E. coli (12.8 ± 2.92) classified as weak and S. aureus (12.6 ± 3.68) strong in inhibiting antibacterial activity. The positive control was very strong in inhibiting the antibacterial activity of E. coli (33.8±15.7) and S. aureus (42.8±11.8). The isolates obtained were of the genus Streptococcus, Aerococcus, Planoccocus, and Micrococcus.
