The relationship of body mass index (BMI) with force expiration volume 1 second (FEV1) in adolescents

This study investigates the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1) in adolescents. The aim of this study is to understand how BMI interacts with lifestyle factors such as physical activity that may affect FEV1 in adolescents. This study uses an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design and involves 84 students aged 16-19 years from the Faculty of Medicine, Sam Ratulangi University. Data were collected using a CONTEC SP70B spirometer and analyzed with Spearman correlation test using SPSS software. The results showed a significant relationship between BMI and FEV1, where an increase in BMI was associated with an increase in FEV1. These findings can provide further insight into the relationship between lung vital capacity and nutritional status during adolescence and its implications for lung health.
