Abstract: Exercise or physical activity is a part of the basic necessities of daily life in particular improvement of the standard of health. Several studies have shown that reduced physical activity may lower lung resistance and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Physical training or exercise causes an increase in respiratory muscle endurance so that respiratory function will increase. One assessment is a measure of lung function FEV1 (force expiratory Volume in One Second), which can provide information on the maximum rate of air flow in the lungs. The purpose of this study to determine the ratio of FEV1 in male students active and inactive exercises in the department of General Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sam Ratulangi. This research method is analytical cross-sectional approach (Cross-Sectional). The sample was selected using the sampling purpose / non-probability sampling. The results of this study showed significant differences between the average value of FEV1 in subjects of active and inactive exercise (p <0.05). Conclusion: The value of FEV1 in male students who actively exercise is higher than that is not actively exercising.
Key words: Physical exercise, FEV1.
