ABSTRACT

Gingival health is a factor that must be considered and taken care by the fixed orthodontic appliance. Things that affect the health of gingiva fixed orthodontic appliance is oral hygiene because the components of the fixed orthodontic appliance hard to clean which if left unchecked could increase the caries, periodontal diseases such as gingival inflammation that also called by  gingivitis. Gingivitis if continually left unchecked would lead to periodontitis, halitosis, periodontal pockets, unstable teeth and tooth loss. This study intends to determine the health the gingiva on the fixed orthodontic appliance in SMAN 1 Manado. This research is descriptive and conducted in SMAN 1 Manado with 31 people as samplesand sampling was done by total sampling method. The results showed that  majority  of the 31 respondent’s gingival healthis in mild inflammatory criteria based Loe and Silness with gingival index scores of 0.9 and just a little with gingival index score of 1.3 and no criteria for normal and heavy inflammation.

ABSTRAK

Kesehatan gingiva merupakan faktor yang harus diperhatikan dan dijaga oleh pengguna alat ortodontik cekat. Hal yang mempengaruhi kesehatan gingiva pengguna alat ortodontik cekat adalah kebersihan mulut karena komponen-komponen pada alat ortodontik cekat sulit dibersihkan yang jika dibiarkan dapat meningkatkan terjadinya karies, penyakit periodontal seperti inflamasi gingiva atau yang disebut gingivitis. Gingivitis bila dibiarkan terus menerus akan menyebabkan periodontitis, halitosis, poket, gigi goyang, dan gigi lepas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui status kesehatan gingiva pada pengguna alat ortodontik cekat di SMA Negeri 1 Manado. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dan  dilakukan di SMA Negeri 1 Manado dengan jumlah sampel 31 orang dan pengambilam sampel dilakukan dengan metode total sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukan dari 31 responden sebagian besar status kesehatan gingiva pada kriteria inflamasi ringan berdasarkan Loe and Silness dengan skor indeks gingiva 0,9 dan kriteria inflamasi sedang hanya sedikit dengan skor indeks gingiva 1,3 dan tidak ada kriteria inflamasi normal dan berat.
