ABSTRACT
Sembung rambat plant (Mikania micrantha) is one weed in Indonesia which has a great potential as one alternative antibacterial. Sembung rambat leaf contains active substances in the form of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids. However, substances that act as an antibacterial are flavonoids and tannins. Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium that causes dental caries and has the ability to produce the acid sensation in the oral cavity. One way that can be done to cope with Streptococcus mutans is by using sembung rambat.The purpose of this study is to determine whether the extract sembung rambat leaf (Mikania micrantha) have inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans, as well as knowing the amount of inhibition extract sembung rambat leaf (Mikania micrantha) on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. This study is an experimental laboratory research using sinks with a modified method of Kirby-bauer. The samples are taken from the Patokaan village in North Minahasa then extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol. Streptococcus mutans bacteria are taken from the pure stock bactery Pharmacy Lab. Faculty of Science University of Sam Ratulangi. The result showed inhibition zone diameter of the extract of sembung rambat against Streptococcus mutans by 15 mm and is included in the strong category. From this study it can be concluded that the extract of sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha) have inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.

Tanaman sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha) merupakan salah satu gulma di Indonesia yang memiliki potensi besar sebagai salah satu antibakteri alternatif. Daun sembung rambat mengandung zat aktif dalam bentuk metabolit sekunder seperti alkaloid, saponin, flavonoid, steroid, tanin, dan terpenoid. Akan tetapi, yang berperan sebagai antibakteri yaitu flavonoid dan tanin. Streptococcus mutans merupakan bakteri penyebab karies gigi dan memiliki kemampuan menghasilkan suasana asam dalam rongga mulut. Salah satu cara yang dapat dilakukan untuk menanggulangi Streptococcus mutans yaitu dengan menggunakan daun sembung rambat. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui apakah ekstrak daun sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha) memiliki daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans, serta mengetahui besarnya daya hambat ekstrak daun sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha) terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental laboratorium dengan metode modifikasi Kirby-bauer menggunakan sumuran. Sampel daun sembung rambat diambil dari desa Patokaan kabupaten Minahasa Utara kemudian diekstraksi dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 96%. Bakteri Streptococcus mutans diambil dari stok bakteri murni Laboratorium Farmasi Fakultas M-IPA Universitas Sam Ratulangi Manado. Hasil penelitian didapatkan diameter zona hambat ekstrak daun sembung rambat terhadap Streptococcus mutans sebesar 15 mm dan termasuk dalam kategori kuat. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak daun sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha) memiliki daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans.
