ABSTRACT

 

The Manado bay waters are the habitat of soft coral Klyxum sp., that contains potential bioactive compounds, which can be utilized in the health field. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the extract and fraction of soft coral Klyxum sp. against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Samples were extracted by maceration and fractionation using ethanol, methanol, n-hexane, and chloroform solvents, respectively. Antibacterial activity was performed using diffusion method agar (disc diffusion Kirby and Bauer). The results showed soft coral Klyxum sp. Obtained from Manado Bay, against Staphylococcus aureus only chloroform fraction, n-hexane fraction, and ethanol extract having antibacterial activity and against Escherichia coli only chloroform fraction, n-hexane fraction and methanol fraction having antibacterial activity, with antibacterial power class against Both bacteria are categorized as weak.

ABSTRAK

Perairan teluk Manado merupakan habitat dari karang lunak Klyxum sp. yang memiliki kandungan senyawa bioaktif potensial yang dapat dimanfaatkan dibidang kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak dan fraksi karang lunak Klyxum sp. yang diperoleh dari teluk Manado terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Sampel diekstraksi secara maserasi dan fraksinasi menggunakan pelarut etanol, metanol, n-heksan, dan kloroform. Aktivitas antibakteri antibakteri dilakukan menggunakan metode difusi agar (disc diffusion Kirby and Bauer). Hasil penelitian menunjukan karang lunak Klyxum sp. yang diperoleh dari Teluk Manado, terhadap Staphylococcus aureus hanya fraksi kloroform, fraksi n-heksan, dan ekstrak etanol yang memiliki aktivitas antibakteri dan terhadap Escherichia coli hanya fraksi kloroform, fraksi n-heksan dan fraksi metanol yang memiliki aktivitas antibakteri, dengan golongan daya antibakteri terhadap kedua bakteri dikategorikan lemah.
