ABSTRACT

Indonesian population, many of them suffer from tooth and mouth disease caused by local accumulation of dental plaque bacteria. Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the bacteria, which cause the tooth disease. Euphorbia hirta (hairy spurge) contains chemical compounds of tannins, phenols, saponins, and flavonoids and is also an antibacterial against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The objective of this research is to formulate the mouthwashes preparation of hairy spurge plant with concentration of 0.5%, 1% and 2%, and to test the antibacterial activity. The results showed that the extract of hairy spurge plant can be formulated into mouthwash and has antibacterial activity with the best inhibition zone at 2% concentration with the mean diameter of the inhibition zone was 35.5 mm.

ABSTRAK

Penduduk di Indonesia banyak yang menderita penyakit pada gigi dan mulut yang disebabkan karena adanya akumulasi lokal bakteri plak gigi. Porphyromonas gingivalis merupakan salah satu bakteri yang menyebabkan penyakit pada gigi. Euphorbia hirta (Patikan kebo) mengandung senyawa-senyawa kimia tanin, fenol,saponin, flavonoid dan juga merupakan antibakteri terhadap bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memformulasi sediaan obat kumur tanaman patikan kebo kosentrasi 0,5%, 1% dan 2 %, serta melakukan pengujian aktivitas antibakteri. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ekstrak tanaman patikan kebo dapat diformulasikan menjadi obat kumur dan memiliki aktivitas antibakteri dengan zona hambat yang paling baik pada kosentrasi 2% dengan diameter rata-rata zona hambat yaitu 35,5 mm.
