Vision

To become a leading scientific journal in the Indo-Pacific region that publishes high-quality research on aquatic science and tropical aquatic resource management, contributing meaningfully to scientific knowledge and the sustainability of marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Mission

  • ●  Promoting multidisciplinary studies integrating ecology, biology, oceanography, and technology in aquatic resource management.
  • ●  Connecting Indonesia's scientific community — especially eastern Indonesia — with regional and international research networks.
  • ●  Supporting evidence-based policy-making for the conservation and management of coastal, marine, and inland aquatic ecosystems.

Focus Statement

Jurnal Ilmiah PLATAX is dedicated to publishing original scientific research and comprehensive reviews in the fields of aquatic ecosystems, aquatic biodiversity, and sustainable management of aquatic resources. The journal focuses particularly on tropical aquatic ecosystems of the Indo-Pacific region, especially the waters of North Sulawesi and surrounding areas within the Coral Triangle — the world's most biodiverse marine region. The journal's name derives from the genus Platax (Batfish/Bannerfish), an iconic species of Indo-Pacific tropical waters.

Scope of Topics

The journal accepts manuscripts covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

5. Marine & Coastal Ecotourism

9. Remote Sensing & GIS in Aquatic Research
10. Fisheries Science & Aquaculture
11. Fisheries Agribusiness & Socio-Economics fisheries household economy, supply chain, marketing, institutions, coastal community social dimensions
12. Aquatic Product Technology post-harvest technology, food safety and quality of aquatic products, bioprocessing, and processing technology
13. Capture Fisheries & Fishing Technology fishing gear technology, fishing vessels, navigation, fishing grounds, and sustainable fishing operations

Added in 2026: Topics 12 (Aquatic Product Technology) and 13 (Capture Fisheries & Fishing Technology) have been added to align with OJS category settings effective 2026.

Research utilizing spatial analysis, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highly welcomed. Cross-disciplinary manuscripts linking aquatic science with social sciences, economics, or marine policy are also considered provided their relevance to aquatic ecosystems is clear.

Out-of-Scope Manuscripts

  • 1  Research outside aquatic and fisheries sciences (e.g., civil engineering, non-fisheries agriculture, general medicine, general economics/business, non-aquatic governance law).
  • 2  Fisheries studies purely focused on production technology without ecological dimensions.
  • 3  Manuscripts duplicating or overlapping with previously published articles.
  • 4  Unsolicited reviews that do not meet minimum reference standards.

Geographic Focus

Located in Manado, North Sulawesi — the main gateway to the Coral Triangle, which hosts 76% of world coral species and 37% of coral reef fish species.

  • 2  The Coral Triangle Region (Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands)
  • 3  Indo-Pacific Region (tropical waters of Southeast Asia, Western Pacific, and Eastern Indian Ocean)

Language and Formatting Requirements

  • ●  Language: English or Indonesian (used consistently). Abstracts, keywords, and titles must be bilingual.

  • ●  File Format: Microsoft Word (.docx).
  • ●  References: Minimum 20 primary, up-to-date references (≤10 years).

Accreditation and Standards

Jurnal Ilmiah PLATAX adheres to national accreditation standards managed through ARJUNA and COPE guidelines. It implements a Double-Blind Peer Review process and assigns permanent Crossref DOIs.
