Analysis of Clove Price Fluctuations and Farmer Income in Buyat Village

Abstract

Cloves are one of the most profitable plantation agricultural commodities for farmers in terms of income because they have a strategic role and contribute significantly to increasing farmers' income, especially in Buyat Village. However, the highly fluctuating price of cloves has a significant impact on the stability of their household economy. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of price fluctuations on farmers' income and the strategies used to deal with them. The study used a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. Informants were selected purposively, namely farmers who had planted cloves for at least five years and had directly experienced the impact of price fluctuations. The results of the study showed that when prices dropped drastically, farmers' incomes decreased significantly. Some farmers postponed the sale of their harvests, stored cloves until prices improved, or sought additional income from jobs such as construction workers and planting other commodities. Therefore, this study recommends that the government play an active role in stabilizing prices, providing transparent market information, expanding the role of cooperatives, and providing training in agricultural product management. A collaborative approach between the government, cooperatives, and farmers is essential to improving economic resilience amid price uncertainty.
