Uji Daya Hambat Virgin Coconut Oil terhadap Pertumbuhan Bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis

Abstract: Porphyromonas gingivalis is a type of bacteria that commonly causes periodontal disease. Several studies have revealed that virgin coconut oil (VCO) is able to provide antibacterial effects due to its high fatty acid content, especially lauric acid. This study aimed to identify the ability of VCO to inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. This test used the disc diffusion method. Samples of VCO were taken from the Agricultural Instrument Standardization Agency (BSIP) for palm plants which were processed using the dry method and made into concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% with four repetitions. The Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria used were cultured bacteria from the Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Sam Ratulangi, Manado. The results for VCO concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% showed antibacterial activity. The largest mean diameter was 7.5 mm in 100% concentration of VCO, meanwhile the smallest mean diameter, namely 25% concentration of VCO, was 3.1 mm. In conclusion, virgin coconut oil (VCO) has inhibitory effect on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The higher the concentration, the greater the inhibitory effect.

Abstrak: Porphyromonas gingivalis merupakan salah satu jenis bakteri yang ssering menyebabkan penyakit periodontal. Beberapa penelitian mengungkapkan Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) mampu memberikan efek antibakteri yang disebabkan oleh kandungan asam lemak khususnya asam laurat yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kemampuan VCO dalam menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis. Pengujian ini menggunakan metode difusi cakram. Sampel VCO diambil dari Badan Standarisasi Instrumen Pertanian (BSIP) Tanaman Palma yang diolah dengan metode kering dan dibuat menjadi konsentrasi 25%, 50%, 75% dan 100% dengan empat kali pengulangan. Bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis yang digunakan merupakan bakteri biakan dari Laboratorium Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) Universitas Sam Ratulangi Manado. Hasil pengujian konsentrasi 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100% menunjukkan aktivitas antibakteri. Rerata diameter terbesar yaitu 7,5 mm pada konsentrasi VCO 100% dan rerata diameter terkecil yaitu 3,1 mm pada konsentrasi VCO 25%. Simpulan penelitian ini yaitu Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) memiliki daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Porphyromonas gingivalis. Semakin tinggi konsentrasi, semakin besar daya hambat yang dihasilkan.
