Abstract

ABSTRACT

Lemon cui peel (Citrus microcarpa) is a local commodity and the main waste from lemon juice. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity and sunscreen of flavonoid extract from lemon cui peel based on nanoparticles. Lemon cui peel powder was extracted by soxhlet extraction using petroleum ether and 80% ethanol for 6 hours. Each filtrate was evaporated and dried in oven to obtain petroleum ether extract (EPE) and ethanol extract (EE). Then the two extracts were tested for content of phenolic total, flavonoids, free radical scavenging activity and sunscreen effectiveness by determining the SPF value. The results showed that the highest content of phenolic total was in EE (28.96 µg/mL) compared to EPE (7.49 µg/mL), the highest content of  flavonoid total was in EE (27.91 µg/mL) compared to EPE (17,62 µg/mL), the highest free radical scavenging activity was EE (47.88%) compared to EPE (16.08%) and the highest sunscreen effectiveness was found in EE compared to EPE. Thus, it is concluded that Ethanol Extract has the potential as an antioxidant and sunscreen.
