Abstract

Navicula sp. galur TAD is a diatom that has the potential to produce lipids as raw material for biodiesel production. Biodiesel derived from lipids of Navicula sp. galur TAD is produced through esterification and transesterification processes to convert fatty acids into methyl esters. The purpose of this study was to produce high lipid content from cells by growing them in media with varied nutrient compositions (nitrogen and silicon) and subsequently converting the cells into biodiesel. This research was conducted in three main stages. First, Navicula sp. galur TAD cells were grown in media with varying nitrogen and silicon compositions (Mn, M1, M2, and M3) to obtain biomass with high lipid content. Next, the lipid content of the harvested biomass was determined. Finally, biodiesel was produced from the isolated lipids. The results showed that the biomass of Mn, M1, M2, and M3 medium, respectively, was 2,734±0,0001, 2,3453±0,000007, 2,0581±0.00014, and 1,8354 ±0,00021 g dry biomass, with biomass productivity of 0,1625±0,0003, 0,1456±0,000005, 0,1363±0,01203, and 0,1070±0,00055 gL-1day-1. Meanwhile, the lipid content in Navicula grown in M1 medium (31.6659%) was higher than in the other media, indicating that decreasing nitrogen concentration increases lipid accumulation in cells. Furthermore, the produced biodiesel was analyzed by GC-MS, showing a composition of 51.72% methyl hexadecanoate (methyl palmitate) and 48.28% methyl octadecanoate (methyl oleate). These results indicate that Navicula sp. galur TAD has the potential to produce biodiesel.
